29th OCTOBER 2002 THE MAFFEI GALAXIES

The Maffei galaxies are a group local to our galaxy, but because they lie in the plane of the Milky Way, we view them through the dust and gas and so they are rather faint. If it was not for this, Maffei 1 and 2 would be among the five the brightest galaxies in the night sky. They were not recognised as galaxies until the 1960's

Reworked version with 5min exposures left out, and an improved flat field correction , allowing background to be lowered
