SPECTROSCOPY

 

NOVA IN SERPENS 9th APRIL 2005

This object was first reported on 4th April 2005 by G Pojmanski at Vmag 14.4 (IAUC 8505) The magnitude in this image is 11.0 (CCD unfiltered, reduced using Rmag of comp stars from USNO survey - line of 3 stars at bottom centre of image)

The location is 17h49m25s -12deg59arcmin59arcsec (J2000) No star is visible at this location on the DSS plates. The star to the upper right of the image is HD161982 at Vmag 9.7

The spectrum below was taken using a 100 l/mm transmission grating in the converging beam of the VC200L with f6.4 focal reducer and SC3 "Pipcam" It clearly shows strong Hydrogen Balmer emission lines, typical of a classical Nova.

The object was confirmed as a Nova on 10th April 2005 and given the identity V378 Ser (IAUC 8509)
